Get To Know is a series that helps you learn more about how wetsuits and how they work. Today, we’re looking at the Premium Chest-Zip Short Arm Steamer.

We make a large range of suits at Volte. From Back-Zip Steamers, to Zipperless Wetsuits, to Wetsuit Jackets; there’s a good chance you’ll find your preference somewhere in our collection. We’ve injected variety into our brand for a reason – everyone has their own taste when it comes to materials, fit and style.

With that in mind, there are a handful of suits that seem to be favourites across the board and they commonly sell out quicker than anything else. Today’s feature, the Chest-Zip Short Arm Steamer, is one of those. We’re going to a look at this 2MM wetsuit and show you the five features that have made it so popular.

1 – Memo-Flex Neoprene

We get it, everyone tells you about their neoprene and how it’s the best in the business. Most of it isn’t, but it’s hard to know that without feeling it yourself. The issue with creating great neoprene is the trade-off between cost, durability and flexibility. It’s easy to sacrifice one element for another; that’s why so many budget varieties don’t seem to last. We firmly believe in quality manufacturing, so we’re ignoring the standard protocol and producing something that ticks all the boxes, and costs us a little extra.

When people wear or touch our wetsuits in real life, one of the most frequent comments we hear is “man, this neoprene is so…comfortable,”  and it truly is noticeably different. The reason? We’ve put more thought and development into it than almost any other aspect of our wetsuits.

2 – Glued and Blind-Stitched

Fundamentally, wetsuits are neoprene panels, joined together to suit the shape of the human body. There are varying methods of joining panels; stitching, glueing, taping, and combinations of all three. The best of these is known as Glued and Blind-stitching, or GBS.

When you chose a suit with GBS, you get the most durability and flexibility, and the best prevention from water flushing in and out. GBS tends to be a feature in heavy winter wetsuits, but our motto is to use the best wherever possible, so it features across all three of our wetsuit ranges, including Premium wetsuits like the Short Arm Steamer. If you can, we advise you to choose a GBS suit wherever possible; you’ll be warmer, more comfortable and able to enjoy your item for a longer period of time.

3 – Solar Skin

This is by no means a suit that lends itself to the depths of winter in Scotland, but it certainly is a great choice for windy afternoons and temperate climates. After all, this is a Steamer by name, so it should provide warmth on top of flexibility and durability.

For that reason, we included our Solar Skin technology to help generate heat and maintain body warmth once you’ve settled into your session. Solar Skin acts just like standard solar panelling; absorbing the sun’s rays and transferring heat energy to your body. The material used isn’t as naturally flexible as neoprene but it actually helps aid your movement by keeping your core nice and warm.

4 – YKK Chest-Zip

The Chest-Zip was introduced during the 2000’s, trending during an era when MySpace, Baggy Jeans and Flip Phones were also on the up. Unlike its generational companions, the Chest-Zip has maintained steady popularity and is now the zip of choice for most modern wetsuits.

None of this is to say Back-Zips are redundant, we certainly still make them ourselves, but the Chest-Zip method provides a few benefits that have seen it enjoy sustained success over the years. When it comes to cold-water surfing, CZ wetsuits are particularly useful and make an intuitive choice. Their structure prevents water from being flushed down your back, vastly reducing the shock of duck-dives in cold water. They also zip horizontally rather than vertically, therefore eliminating the possibility of an accidental unzip halfway through your session; a less than  pleasant scenario in cold climates.

5 – Tailored Fit

Overall, this suit is built to help you surf your best. Short Arm Steamers are generally flattering to their wearer, and ours is no different. We also made some micro-adjustments to ensure it feels as good as it looks. You can see an example of this in the image above, where a stretch panel over the shoulder blades removes the need for seams around the arms; giving a freeing feel to your upper body.

We know you’ll buy this suit to be flexible. It can be used in many climates, is quick to dry and light to carry. It’s the perfect companion for any keen surfer’s backpack. We’ve just added all our new GEN 2 stock to our shop, so make sure you stop by and learn more.
